Sourdough Pancakes.
Zachary's is a busy but friendly diner. But the wait of any amount is worth it. The Sourdough Pancakes are amazing. I have never had pancakes like this anywhere else. I always share the pancakes and an egg breakfast with a friend. Oatmeal Molasses toast is great. Potatoes are great! Coffee is great.

One of the Waitresses is Dreadfully Pathetic.
If you are a follower of my reviews you will find that I have mentioned the waitress from Zachary's in my review of Saturn, just down the street. The only pro to that place was that this waitress did not work there. Imagine this, a mean defensive woman who likes to dish out a passive aggressive attitude but cannot handle an aggressive response! She was very offended when I mildly snickered at her saying "how can pancakes be vegan?" Even though anyone with 1/4 a brain knows that it is very possible and anyone with 1/8 a brain would feel pathetic saying that in front of the coolest people who ever stepped foot in this diner. Here's another thing I did not like... rather than just seating you, they make you sign up on a clipboard even though 90% of the restaurant is empty. What ever happened to being hospitable and asking how many people you have and seating you? The food is pretty decent, how can you ruin an omelet? Well, actually some can but I will save that for another day. I will save it for a little place called IHOP. Does it discern you to compare this place to IHOP? Well, guess what the difference is? You do not have to deal with such nightmarish waitresses. My apologies to the other waitresses if you are kind to your customers.

A spicy concoction.....
Zachary's is the quintessential Santa Cruz beakfast and lunch experience. Homebaked breads, unique recipes, and real coffee create an unforgettable eating experience. Friendly to vegetarians (Mike's mess sub guac for bacon) and wallets alike, your main concern will be the huge let-down you will feel when you move (or drive) away and find out that most cities won't have a place with one dish that approximates the quality and flavor of the dozens of originals on Zach's menu.
Oh, and don't expect to get seated in a real hurry on the weekend, or for that matter any time between 9 and noon. So what, put your name in, cop a squat and watch the world go by.

Delicious homemade cooking and speedy service make this a prime breakfast spot..
The Scene
Zachary's is the type of restaurant that everyone goes to for weekend breakfast. And we do mean everyone. The wait for a table after 9am often approaches an hour, sometimes longer. Free coffee is available for all eager parties waiting for a table. Zachary's seating area is large and spacious; the crowd a mix of UC Santa Cruz students, and families.
The Food
Zachary's signature dish, Mike's Mess (three eggs, bacon, mushrooms, home fries slathered with sour cream, chives and cheese), is a delicious way to start the day. Other breakfast items, like sourdough pancakes with assorted berries, and blueberry cream cheese coffeecake are also masterfully prepared. All of Zachary's ingredients are on the healthier side and there's not a greasy spoon in the house. Provided you are patient, dining here is well worth the wait.

no good at cooking what?.
After bringing two rounds of undercooked eggs back to the kitchen, the server had the nerve to tell us without apology or discount that "this chef's no good at cooking eggs." In a brunch restaurant? Really? Please, people.

The Best!.
I don't know who Zachary is but I'd like to kiss him. Hands down the best breakfast in Santa Cruz, and possibly all of the coast! I can't tell you about lunch cause I never order it, but it has to be good, I'm sure. I saw someone eating chili that looked fantastic and the sandwiches looked huge and wonderful too. But breakfast is what I'm always there for. They put curry spices in their potatoes and they are to die for, Mike's Mess is infamous and, if you like, they have tofu scrambles for the health conscious. They have great specials, fresh ingredients, huge portions, excellent coffee and absolutely -outstanding- service. You may have to wait a while to get in but it's so worth it. The only con, they close at 2. Boo hoo!
